Priests should stay fit and healthy

Catholic News Service posted an interesting story about the need for priests to live a healthier life. It’s easy for clergy to fall into a sedentary lifestyle with a work schedule that has them on call 24 hours every day of the week.

The article quotes Baltimore archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien: “We should remind our priests to take the time for relaxation and physical exercise. It’s very important for their health and their ministry.”

I fully agree with the archbishop. I recently turned 40, and I am in much better shape compared to when I was 30. I eat healthier, I use my bike as much as possible, I run in the morning, and I try to keep my meals balanced. As a result, I weigh some 22 pounds less than 10 years ago!

It hasn’t only affected my physical health, but also my ministry. I have much more stamina, my life is more regular, and I can work harder. Plus: I can pray for my parishioners while I’m running through their neighborhoods!
